Ken Dickson, a very intelligent engineer, approaches his own totally unexpected mental aberrations in both a compassionate and clinical manner: trying to come to terms with his own internal changes and to survive escalating disaster, while not leaving behind empathy for those caught in the turmoil around him. Instead, this is a real page turner which rivets one’s attention on a dramatic medical story populated with quirky, unforgettable characters. One might expect a first novel by a former psych patient to be a “skimmer” that has a few interesting sections scattered among a lot of forgettable recollections. The book is a psychological thriller, a medical mystery story, and a compelling drama-made all the more vivid because it actually happened. “Detour from Normal” does what all great art accomplishes: it transports you to a place you’ve never been before, leaving you with fresh insights and a broader perspective. Prepare to have your mind blown apart then reassembled better than it started.
